So I just finished my playthrough as a mage, which the way it looks feels like it should be the canon storyline since trailer-Hawke casts magic.  It's truly an epic buildup to an even greater epic, and the way it's told, story-in-a-story style, is just perfect.  The game does feel rushed, but overall, it's an enjoyable experience and a fun game.  The story is just awesome and the characters are great. The copy-paste use of existing environments got old quick, but in a way, I didn't end up wasting time exploring some new cave system since I already knew the way.  But that's hardly an excuse for that.  It just felt like Oblivion's dungeons all
